Once again, I was expecting greatness and received yet another YA dystopian. The story didn’t flow well enough to keep my attention, to the point where I stopped reading every other chapter to find something else to entertain me.
The plot solutions were too easy: finding Liam, finding supplies, getting away from the villains, Liam suddenly remembering Ruby after one kiss. Everything slotted together without struggle, to the point of being unrealistic. Alexandra Bracken took the easy way out every time a problem developed, and it made the book boring and predictable.
It’s intended as a high stakes novel, but I lost interest once I realized none of the important characters or their happiness would be sacrificed. The romance got back on track so quickly that the cliffhanger at the end of book 1 wasn’t necessary, the fight scenes always had their scales tipped in the kids’ favor, and the story dragged on and on for 550 pages.
Ruby is supposed to have a 4th grade level education, but she uses “whomever” in her speeches, and long difficult worlds that she didn’t pick up in school, nor on the road, and she doesn’t read. I understand trying to write a grammatically correct novel, but the dialogues have to be true to the characters’ backgrounds, otherwise it’s not believable.
The characters personalities are not accurate. Jude is supposed to be 15 years old, but he acts somewhere between a toddler and a golden retriever. The other teenagers act like adults, and the adults act like spoiled brats. Ruby has finally grown into her powers, but she still relies on everyone else to save her all the time, to the point I’d rather read a book about Vida. Maybe then we’d get a bit of action.
Overall, the writing isn’t that great, I don’t care for these characters, and the plot is not gripping my attention.

Give 'em hell, darlin'
O segundo livro se passa 6 meses após o final choroso e de destruir corações de The Darkest Mind, em que a Ruby agora faz parte da Children's League, sendo que antes ela mal usava suas habilidade, agora sendo Líder de sua equipe Psi, ela tem o dever de usar mais suas habilidade quando são necessárias ou pedidas, apesar de não ter ainda total controle sobre elas.
Esse livro foi tão bom quanto o primeiro, talvez sendo até melhor. A cada capítulo tinha uma situação desperadora, em que Ruby tinha que fazer escolhas impossíveis, os personagens não teve um minuto de paz nesse livro, mesmo nos momentos de clímax e calmaria, ainda existia uma tensão no ar, que deixa qualquer um agustiado pra saber o que vai acontecer.
A evolução de cada personagem é notável e admiráve, e a introdução de personagens novos, que ganham o nosso coração de primeira. l! Foi lindo ver a amizade deles evoluindo com eles. A Ruby está mais forte, dedicada e disposta a proteger todos aqueles importantes para ela. A primeira vez que Ruby e Chubs se encontram em Never Fade foi de aquecer o coração. Chubs está muito mais corajoso, e disposto a arriscar tudo para continuar junto da Ruby e do Liam.
Quando encontram o Liam, o encontro não foi tão bonito. Nesse volume, nós temos um Liam um pouco mais no limite, por motivos que ele tem que lidar com uma organização que desteta, e por estar confuso com todos os pensamentos/sentimentos em relação a Ruby.
Sobre os personagens novos: Vida e sua personalidade única foram um dos motivos positivos desse livro. Toda vez que ela abria a boca, tirava uma risada de mim, ainda mais nas conversas dela com o Chubs

?I don?t know about the rest of you, but I?d be up for hearing about the one-eyed chick,? Vida said with a shrug.
?You are actually the worst person I have ever met,? Chubs said.

Também temos o Cole, irmão do Liam. Cole é integrante da Children's League desde sempre. No primeiro momento, desconfiei bastante dele, porém percebi que o cara realmente quer ajudar as crianças Psi. Quase no final do livro, entendemos melhor seus motivos, e ja adianto, é algo chocante. A relação dele com o Liam não é das melhores, mas conseguimos perceber um cuidado um com outro, aquela coisa de irmão mais velho e mais novo.
E por último, mas não menos importante, temos Jude. Esse garoto ganhou meu coração desde do começo do livro, quando ele era o único que sempre esperava pela Ruby voltar das missões - "My one-kid welcoming committe" - e quando ele não teve medo de tocar na Ruby quando a conheceu, mesmo sabendo que ela era Laranja - "he knew what I was, then. And he?d still touched me. What a brave, stupid kid." - a Ruby sempre achou ele muito corajoso, mesmo sendo do jeito dele. No começo, ele era muito medroso, mas com o decorrer da missão, ele começou a ter muito mais confiança, e como eu me apaixonei por esse personagem. Outro motivo que me fez amar esse garoto, foi seu jeito de sempre acreditar que existe o melhor de todas as pessoas, amaria ver ele interagindo com a Zu. A forma como ele também trouxe leveza à uma Ruby tão muito mais sóbria e até obscura foi maravilhoso!
E o romance de Ruby e Liam, deu o que falar ein. Meu coração quase explodiu de emoção quando eles estavam no posto de gasolina. Uma relação cheia de altos e baixos, mesmo a Ruby se apagando da memória do Liam, o sentimento permaneceu, e isso o machucou de certa forma, depois que descobriu tudo. E isso foi um ponto que até chamou a atenção da Ruby em relação ao que aconteceu com os seus pais.
Não vejo a hora de saber como vai terminar essa história, depois de como terminou o livro, no momento mais épico possível!

Wow, this book man. So I enjoyed the first book but I wasn't blown away. This book though, this had me from the first page.
Having joined the Children's League, Ruby quickly finds out that there is something inherently wrong within the organization. Children are dying while on missions from "accidents" when there should have been no danger. When Ruby and her teammate Jude are sent out with a group of suspect agents and Ruby knows she needs to get out. On top of that, there's a new mission she needs to complete - find Liam and retrieve a flash drive.
While the first book struggled with pacing, I felt this one moved along nicely. I was never bored and nothing ever felt rushed. The characters, mainly Ruby, also showed growth. She knew what she wanted and she stuck to her guns. She was also fiercely protective of the people she cared about. And speaking of people she cared about, we got to meet some new characters in this book: Cole, Vida, and Jude. My sweet, sweet Jude. He was a star for me in this book. I absolutely adored him.
Oh top of the new characters, we also got to see some of the ones we loved from the first book. ANd this was a real treat. The combination of the two groups was fun to read about and we got to see Ruby struggle to combine the Ruby she was before with the Ruby she is now.
However, that ending...I am not happy with that ending at all and would just like to pretend that it didn't exist. And now I shall move on to the third book.
