I was mortified the entire book. Nothing absolutely terrifying was happening, but I felt like something bad was about to happen at any given minute (it never did). My meh score is based on the fact that the plot is basically inexistent... Even though I wasn't expecting anything in particular and this is my first time reading this author, I guess I hoped things were going to be connected at the end, (once I got into the book) and we could get some sense of the night somehow, so the fact that everything was unrelated felt a little bit disappointing but it was entertaining either way.

I do feel that if I wasn't so used to everything being connected, due to my regular readings, I would've enjoyed this much more. And objectively speaking, the fact that these are isolated narratives going on in the middle of the night feels relaxing (wasn't for me, but I guess it is)

I don't think I'll be reading this author again ever or in the near future, but something in me feels I read this in the wrong time so perhaps this type of narrative and author style isn't for me right now, but might be something I'll be more interested in the future. Still it was a light reading, didn't finish the same day due to a mix of tiredness and laziness but it's the type of book you can finish in one sit without getting bored of it.

The compact Murakami. At a mere 200 pages, it's a slim story by this wonderful author's standards. This relative brevity does not imply a lack of depth however. After Dark is quite compelling in its compact timeline, and more importantly quite effective at getting to the heart of the main character. If one is intimidated by Murakami's longer works, but would is interested in seeing what all the international acclaim is about, start with After Dark.

It actually took some time for me to write this review because I had to think about the way this book affected me.

Right off the bat, I enjoyed the anxiety of being on edge to see how the story unfolds and quite idiotically thought Murakami would just hand over some definite ending, that did not happen.

But it was, nonetheless, a vividly imaginative, thrilling, if even possible to say...slice of life all before the sunrise, the ideas weren't entirely unfamiliar but the uniqueness and brilliance in expression are super prominant!

I don't think I really understood this book, lots of moving parts and no real conclusions.
