Fantastisch verhaal van alweer een Noorse auteur met talent! Het verhaal over de jonge pyromaan die de schilderachtig gelegen dorpjes rond Kristiansand teistert is met veel spanning en emoties geschreven en blijft boeien tot de laatste pagina. Het doet echt denken aan een film van Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho!). Mooi hoe de auteur zijn eigen jeugdjaren vermengt met het verhaal van de mysterieuze branden: op die manier voel je je nog dichter betrokken bij het drama. De achterliggende idee is duidelijk: wat doet een super-intelligente en begaafde jongeman in een dorp waar de tijd is blijven stilstaan? Waar hij overal de "beste" is? Verveling en waanzin slaan toe... De anti-held van het verhaal is de auteur zelf: hij trok weg uit het dorp om te gaan studeren in Oslo. Hij kon niet blijven in het dorp, alhoewel hij meteen verliefd is op zijn geboortestreek als hij er later - als auteur - terugkeert. Zoveel menselijkheid ook in deze roman. Een dramatisch hoogtepunt: auteur en hoofdpersonage ("de Pyromaan") bevinden zich per toeval samen in een helikopter die voor toeristen een tochtje maakt over de streek... Een mooier einde kan je niet verzinnen. En dan die geheimzinnige laatste woorden...

I found this book strangely enjoyable, but I can't entirely explain why and I don't know that I would recommend it to anyone else. Yes, the writing is very fine - it's almost exquisite - and the narrative thread about the arsonist is interesting and has compelling characters -- but the other narrative thread, the one about himself, was extraneous and it felt like a commercial break every time he turned back to himself. Probably I enjoyed this book for the same reason that I'm holding off on calling the writing and characters simple; there is a depth here that just avoids being put to words.

Interesting psychological profile of an arsonist. Liked the style, though it is hard to say whether the credit goes to the author or the translator.

Rather meta Norwegian novel. The narrator, a writer, bears the same name as the author and the story is of a series of arsons that took place in his hometown the year he was born. It didn't gel for me. The portions focusing on the narrator seemed solipsistic, and the pace of the story as a whole was like molasses. Although, reading the reviews, perhaps I'm just shallow. At any rate, it wasn't really my cup of tea.

Denne boken er en blanding av historier fra da en pyroman herjet i Finsland og historier om forfatterens oppvekst i samme bygd. Noen av historiene er veldig godt skildret, men ikke alle biter fra forfatterens eget liv traff meg, særlig ikke skildringene av å skrive.
