A fun and touching look at kids’ lives on their walks home from school. This is a 10 chapter book where every chapter is about different kids: a group of hustlers who turn 90 cents into $3 worth of ice cream for an unexpected reason, a skater girl who lost her sister to a boy’s jealousy, a girl who suffers from sickle cell and her best friend, a queer kid and his best friend, and the like. Some stories are better than other- more profound and touching than others. But each story is thoughtful and important becomes it represents all kids.

Y'ALLLLLLLLL. THIS BOOK. I probably could have finished this in a day. It's less than 200 pages, but I needed to savor it. We already know Jason Reynolds is a master storyteller, but this was so freaking amazing. He can literally do everything. The kids in this book were amazing and represented so many issues kids face today, and Jason Reynolds did it so beautifully. I normally have a problem with middle school books, some authors can talk down to kids and Jason does the complete opposite. It's such a beautiful story weaved, only the way Jason Reynolds can.

These stories are easy to read, but deal with intense topics. There's also a good bit of style here making the stories more interesting than the lexile level might indicate.

Gewoon een leuk jeugdboek over een groep jonge tieners die van school naar huis lopen op dezelfde dag. Je volgt telkens iemand anders en de verhalen overlappen elkaar. Het boek is ingedeeld als D-boek (15+, young adult), ik vond het zelf meer voelen als een C boek (de tieners voelen voor mij jonger dan 15, meer richting brugklas/tweede klas).
Het was mijn eerste Jason Reynolds, dus ik verwachtte free-verse-style, maar het verhaal is in de traditionele stijl geschreven (met soms kleine stukjes free verse). Het deed me qua stijl een beetje denken aan Fredrik Backman, maar dan voor tieners. Ik denk dat het boek van mij een nog hogere rating had gekregen als de verhalen op het einde nog net wat meer samen waren gekomen, maar buiten dat: goed boek en.. ook belangrijk: het vertegenwoordigt op een positieve manier een groep jongeren die in traditionele kinderboeken minder voorkwamen (gelukkig worden kinder- en jeugdboeken steeds inclusiever!)

This was a funny, upbeat book about different kids and what they did after school. I loved how the stories combined, though I was a little confused about the last story. I would recommend this to anyone who is look for a short read but wants to feel the feels. This book made me laugh and even she’d a few tears. Hats of to Jason Reynolds!

3.5 stars - Not sure if this is middle grade or young adult. Some of the subjects seem a bit intense for younger readers, but maybe that’s the point. I love that they’re all connected. I was wanting more from some of the stories while others were just the right length. Entertaining.

This book was wonderful. This is my first Jason Reynolds book but absolutely will not be my last. the stories in this book were fun, sweet and a little bit sad. My favorite was the one about the Low Cuts. What I loved most was that every page of this book asked the reader to look more deeply, to appreciate more fully what is in front of them.
