Set post-Alice in Wonderland and the beginning of Mary Ann's adventure through Wonderland.

The word that comes to mind is... "trippy". The artwork is amazing, but the story was far from a smooth read- you get lost in everything that's going on, and while it's a creative twist in the familiar tale of Alice, it just left me feeling like there should've been MORE.

If you want to see what I thought of this book in prose that's actually thought out lovingly written, just check out Elizabeth Bird's review (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/47148868). Ditto to everything she says.

But if you don't feel like working your way over there or don't feel like reading one of her longish but lovely reviews, here's the summary: I loved the artwork. I thought the story was clever and delightfully nonsensical. It's a fractured fairy tale of sorts (note that it's NOT the graphic novel version of Alice in Wonderland; it's more of a spin-off) and I love those. And there's something awesome about seeing the Queen of Hearts get bonked on the head. Definitely give this one to Alice fans - book or film.

Whimsical art makes up for a lacking plot. I wish there's more regarding who Mary Ann is, her backstory. The main plot was okay. I would've liked to see more growth after she escapes the Queen of Hearts. Overall, I enjoyed the art more than the story. Good for a one hour read.

GRAPHIC NOVEL

Wonderland is a graphic novel that tells the story of the elusive Mary Ann, the white rabbit's maid, and what life was like for those in Wonderland after Alice. In the story, Alice is only remembered as this bog monster who was ery curious. Mary Ann is clean and humble. The story starts with the Queen running into Mary Ann and getting dirt on her apron. Because of this, Mary Ann accidentally hits the Queen of Spades. Eventually, she falls into a hole and meets another Queen who claims she is now her servant. She soon uncovers the evil doings of the Queen of Hearts, as she struggles to follow Alice's role.

Both authors did a great job at keeping the essence of Lewis Carroll's world alive. It had mostly the same characters and the illustrations kept the sense that you were still in the same Wonderland that Alice was in. It was a book about new ideas added on to an old classic. Though missing the witty writing and humor that is in the original Alice in Wonderland, I think it was done very well.

I really enjoyed the illustrations, although the storyline was tremendously confusing at specific points. I loved the depiction of the Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, and March Hare, as well as the addition of new characters like the Queen of Spaces and Sir Edward. Again, I felt like there were specific plot holes that confused me at times. Overall, I really enjoyed this retelling and how it somewhat combined the original storyline.
