Despite having a lot of cientific vocabulary, I found the story very enjoyable. I do wish it could be a little more fast passed, as it drags in some parts, and that it had more character development. The characters are not the main focus, but the reader should have more information than the hair colour and name of each character.
The main theme and archeology content was great, but I found it overall a little flat.

I was specifically looking for books about archaeology/anthropology/sociology when someone suggested the Jack Howard series. A fictional adventure story about a marine archaeologist who stumbles upon the lost city of Atlantis? Sign me up!

Unfortunately, I'm feeling pretty unenthusiastic about this first book in David Gibbins' series. The later books do seem to have higher ratings here on Goodreads, but I'm not sure I want to continue on to the others honestly.

I'm in the minority here, but I am typically a fan of wordy, drawn out descriptions in books. The descriptions used here are certainly wordy but not at all satisfying for me. It felt more like browsing a textbook than reading a piece of fiction. There were very extensive descriptions of each weapon and piece of machinery, not something I'm especially interested in learning in great detail. It felt as though the author was trying to teach me rather than entertain me. It took me out of the story.

Ultimately, I feel as though this could have been much more interesting and exciting. Instead, I found myself zoning out listening to the audio and constantly needing to go back to see what I missed. The story itself had so much potential, but I couldn't really get into it.

I found myself really excited and happy for the first quarter of this book, then steadily more disappointed as I continued reading... The archaeology was the only redeeming feature of the book, while all the plot with Aslan and the submarine and the extensive technical details of the underwater technology was dull, unnecessary, and confusing.

For a first book it was enjoyable.
Gibbins starts really strongly tying together the main characters in the book. Once you meet the antagonist I started to lose interest. The climax was short and sudden. Then they stretch out the book to the end and it feels like Gibbins is trying to cram his world in almost refusing to complete the book.
I am interested in seeing how Gibbins evolves as a fiction writer.

I really liked this book. At first, I thought that the whole Atlantis story was going to be all about the Minoan culture on Crete, which is what EVERYONE talks about when talking about Atlantis, but thankfully it wasn't! This is actually a COMPLETELY different story and theory of Atlantis than I have ever heard or read, which I have to admit is a big part of why I like the book!!! lol

There is one thing that kind of bugs me about the book...and that is how they kind of magically have all of these resources available to them that a) would never be available to every day archaeologists, b) would COST WAYYYYYYY too much for everyday archaeologists(most do NOT have a "benefactor" like in the book), and C!!) most of the things that they have to make their journey possible are not even possible with today's technology as far as we know. some of it is just a little too sci-fi for me.

But that is the only problem I really have with the book, and yes, I know it is fiction. I just kind of feel like if you are going to make it a somewhat believable story don't put your hero in situations where you have to make up things to save him. Just saying.

But I do still really like the book and definitely recommend it!! There will be a more in-depth review on my blog soon!! http://rendezvouswithabook.blogspot.com/
