I’m starting to really enjoy a western. This is a quirky, brutal and sometimes funny story of two brothers.

Fantastic, unique take on the classic Western. The narrative is tender and thoughtful, while also cruel and violent. The story of two brothers and the characters they meet along their journeys is enthralling. The protagonist is hopeful and determined, but still a brutal and unpredictable man. I couldn’t put this book down.

If anyone was going to get me to love a Western, it was Patrick deWitt.

If I could give this book negative stars I would. It’s unnecessarily gross and vulgar and has taken me forever to get through because it’s mostly whiney, stream of consciousness dribble from one of the character’s thoughts. Don’t waste your time.

Hired killers, Charlie and Eli Sisters travel from Oregon City to San Francisco to murder Herman Warm. On the way, one of them starts to question their line of business. The first half of the book is a surreal, dream-like ramble through an Old West populated with bizarre and wonderful characters. The second half gets a bit more plot bound and moves from comedy to tragedy via a parade of grisly deaths. The whole thing is very readable, funny, sad and strangely beautiful. Definitely worth reading.

A charming, quite funny romp with an intriguing background and solid prose. The main plot wasn’t up to much and character exploration seemed surface level to me, but still an enjoyable time.

For a book with the amout of praise this one has had, it was disappointing.  I enjoyed it, but I was expecting so much more.
