This book had been collecting dust on my physical TBR shelf for years, so in an attempt to lower the numbers
I finally picked it up. It started off decently with an acceptable pace and nice writing style, but started feeling draggy towards the middle even though it isn’t a big enough book for it. I am not particularly fond of any characters. Francois and Natalie’s relationship was so dull that his departure, so to speak, wasn’t missed. It did not leave the impact it should have left on us readers. Natalie is also a meh character whose “walls” never truly go down in this book. Markus and she do not belong together and are purely settling for each other. Do they deserve better? I don’t know. That’s the thing. I do not know these characters. They remain superficial to me. They have no real depth. I can’t connect with them. Leaving them aside though, you know who deserved a better ending? Charlie’s wife. I was hoping she’d be running for the hills by the end. I hated how he tried to return anytime his fragile ego was hit. I understand why David wrote it this way, but I still decide to go about the books I read purely by the joy they make or not make me feel.
