Not as fluid as the previous 3 books. It felt like
the idea of the cosmere was created during this book so all the context around it had to be added in. At times it was too much and either broke the flow of the book or made it feel like a filler for the next novel in the series.

Rhythm of War - Brandon Sanderson

šŸ“–

ā - 5

Ok so obviously I canā€™t say too much about this as itā€™s a 4th book and I donā€™t want to spoil anything so Iā€™ll do my best. I will mention characters names though so if youā€™re particularly sensitive to knowing whoā€™s alive at this point etc then just be warned.

Despite the fact that this book took me 3 months to read, I actually did really love it. I think starting this around the same time as Baldurā€™s Gate was my mistake but we got there in the end.

So I think this is probably my second favourite book in this series after Way of Kings. Kaladin and Navani are my two favourite characters in Stormlight and we got to spend lots of time with them in this book so that made me happy. Navaniā€™s plotline in this book was definitely my favourite, I loved every part of it. Hers might be my favourite character arc in the whole series actually.

The way that this book opens up the world is wild and I really wish that I was better at keeping track of things. I kind of want to go back and reread some of the Cosmere books that I read a while ago now that I have a better understanding of things but thereā€™s just so many books I still need to read that I might need to wait a bit for that.

My main issue with this was that I really didnā€™t care about the flashback scenes. Now, to be fair, I struggle with flashback and vision scenes in general and the flashbacks have been my main struggle with this entire series. But the flashbacks in this book were a particular struggle for me, I really didnā€™t care at all. I do like that character in the main storyline but their flashbacks just felt unnecessary to me. It obviously didnā€™t ruin the book for me though.

I enjoyed this a lot more on my 2nd read than I remembered on my 1st. It's definitely a slower burn than Words of Radiance and Oathbringer, but it has a lot of emotional moments that I think really work.

Once again, Sanderson has created a stunning addition to the Stormlight series.

Like the books (full sized novels, not the novellas) before it, we dove into the backstory of a character: Venli. We also were transported into Shadesmar, visiting the Honorspren capital, which was really cool.

One thing I love about this series is that it goes into hard topics, such as abuse, addiction, and suicide, and shows people overcoming those trials.

And the climaxā€¦ ohā€¦ it was amazing. Iā€™m not entirely sure whether I liked this bookā€™s climax better, or Oathbringerā€™s better. I think Iā€™m not sure because theyā€™re great in different ways. Iā€™ll be honest, I actually cried. Not because I was sad, though that almost happened too, but because there is such a touching scene. And then Kaladin gets some major character development! Yay! *dances around throwing confetti* Yes, heā€™s my favorite character.

But oh ho ho. You thought I was done. NOPE! The climax was crazy, but just WAIT until the epilogueā€¦
And then the book ends. Super great though! I LOVED it! Excitedly waiting for book 5. :)

I can't believe I was lucky enough to forget half the twists in the ending before rereading this one. What a great book. It's a slow burn, and there's a lot of different threads, but I'll be damned if I wasn't invested in the characters.
