Ok so this is solid 3.25/ 5 . It was SPOOKY and honestly had a lot of things I wasn't expecting but I was throughly confused for the first 100 pages so I really don't like that and just felt like things happened that I was like "yeah true" excited for the second but still have many questions

Re-read Dec/Jan 2023 anticpating volume 2 Jan 10. Still love Dawes. She is me.

I was happy to know the book was waiting for me at the end of each day. ( I think it took 4 days to finish). Was slow to start/set up the scene. She had too many threads to pull together at the end and I had to just go along with that ride and not try to make too much sense of it.

Readable, fun, but there are so many others on my TBR shelf needing attention I may not buy the follow up. HA! PRE-ORDERED THE FOLLOW UP AS SOON AS I HEARD ABOUT IT.

Additional thoughts a few days later:
Dawes is the best character. I would follow her to the ends of the earth.
Having 3 warded locations/refuges was a great comfort, especially the Hutch. I want to be there.
Authors should let their characters sleep - not go 36 hours awake. It's stressful to read.

At first, I did not like this book at all. It felt too dark, a little pretentious, and like a lot of work to get through. That changed about 150-ish pages in, where the mysteries start to ramp up.

I didn't find Alex all that likable. Usually that's a big deal breaker for me liking a book as a whole, but I didn't mind it so much here.

I really liked the take on ghosts, except for the gas station incident. That felt unnecessary.
