This one didn't really live up to memory, but it was still pretty good. I'd forgotten that this one really wasn't about Jason at all, and he was just there to fill up chapters and bring Madison back to Trinity. This was the end of the trilogy, and the end of the major war that had been brewing in the last two books, so I'm wondering why there was a need to write another two books after this one (other than the obvious, of course). There was definitely a lot of plot armor in this one, even with all the unfinished threads. I can definitely see why I loved it so much when I was younger though

Okay. I’ve burned through this book. The writing is fantastic like every book she does but god damn could the characters be bigger whiny bitches in this one? I’m going to read the next book of course. But god Madison and Jason lock it up.

This book was such a slog. I wanted to stop at multiple points but I liked the second one so much I hoped it would get better. The characters made stupid decisions, and the plot moved slowly. The writing is confusing, lacking details, and the world building is weak.

3.75 stars. Definitely better than the first. Honestly each installment got better than its predecessor, which I suppose is a good thing. And it’s not that I didn’t like Jack (the POV character from the first book).maybe it’s just that the magic system was better understood and the plot faster in the second two novels

Not as good as the first one, still engaging though. The first half was a bit choppy, but the second delivered.

I really really enjoyed this conclusion, it was so much better than I expected. The Dragon heir is definitely my favorite one in the series. I felt like this book didn't have such a long introduction as the others, so there was more action and it was more captivating from the start. I actually also really started liking the characters in the book. The Dragon Heir was such a nice and fast read and I thought the magic use in this book was quite epic, even though the magic system is not that unique. The story also got a little more complex, which I appreciated. I might check out the other two books too.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This book was enjoyable, however, I think it lacked some things to make it a great book. The Dragon Heir highlighted several characters that were just boring.... namely Jason. He was one dimensional and just not a great character to follow. I was bored in several spots as the entirety of the book seemed only to "get going" around the climax of the book. I suppose that is to be expected as the characters themselves are just waiting for a war that may start at any unknown moment.

SpoilerSide thought: It did raise the question in my mind of "what determines whether or not someone is worthy of the gift?" Like Longbranch and Willey were simply acting according to the time and culture that they were raised in. Of course they were slavers and bad people, however, what determines whether or not someone is bad. Perhaps they were the example to all of the other wizards and therefore served as a warning. That could make sense, because otherwise, most of the wizards would have their stones removed, as the book tells us that it's basically just those in Trinity that are the "good" wizards.

The book and worldbuilding does lack a little. I'm interesting in reading the next book and seeing where it goes.

I only got into the book during the last 300 or so pages (there were 1,479 pages on my iPhone), which is such a shame. The first three-fourth of the book was really slow. I felt like nothing important really happened. However, the last part of the book was so action-packed, filled with tension and just plain AWESOME! I think it greatly makes up for the seemingly lackadaisical beginning. This seems to be the case with all of the books in the series. Boring & slow beginning + Totally mind-blowing ending.

The characters, Madison and Jason, really annoyed me. They were very whiny, but I didn't realize I had grown quite attached to them until the last part of the book. That fact that all the characters, especially Leesha and Seph, had grown and developed so much throughout the series made me so emotional! I would've given this book 3 stars but it gets a +1 because of its amazing ending and its amazing character development!

Overall, this was a pretty action-filled book with a fast-paced plot. It only picked up toward the end, so if one of your pet peeves is a slow beginning then this might not be the book for you. Also, why would you start from the middle of the series?!

Signing off!

Full Review (SPOILERS):

I was really struggling to get through this book, it's an older ya fantasy series and it just doesn't hold up as well with todays ya fantasy market. I bought these books years ago and have probably read one per year since then. I find them slow to get through for the most part and I think it is because of the setting and how slowly the plot progresses.

However, when there is action I think her writing really shines. The opening scene with Jason breaking into Ravens Ghyll I was instantly hooked, and then we went back to Trinity and I struggled to get through (and when Warren Barber attacked), until the last 70 pages when the main battle happened.

Also I was surprisingly upset when Jason died. He was my favorite character in the series I found him to be the most interesting to me personally, and for someone who was struggling to get through the book I felt pretty attached to his character.
