This was a good window into the time period this book is written in. Which were filled with battles and valour.

I wish I could have liked it more. The plot and characters were interesting enough, but Sir Walter Scott was not the most winning stylist.

*pats self on the back*

This was a long time coming. Let me first give you some history on myself and this book: When I was just a tiny tot, my sister somehow acquired a collection of "World's Greatest Literature" books, one of which is this very copy I have just read of Ivanhoe. Over the last, let's say 20 years, I have picked it up, read the first page MAYBE, and hastily put it down, without ever knowing what an awesome tale this is.

Fast forward to the beginning of February 2017: I join a book club here on GR focusing on classic lit because I want to broaden my horizons, and wouldn't you know it, Ivanhoe was one of January's reads. So I grab it off the shelf and the book and I have a staring contest because I remember all the times I picked up and then put down this book.

But I push through the first chapter, which is basically a short history of England at the time (and probably why I couldn't get past that first page all these years).

Then

BAM.

This book slaps me straight in the face and says: THIS IS WHAT WE TRAIN FOR! And thus begins my epic journey through Ivanhoe.

It is probably more efficient for anyone reading this review to simply go through my activity logs, because I was quite adamant about them, and I couldn't possibly describe in detail all the things I felt while reading this (it would take days, and I am running out of available characters for this review). Just know that I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I reread this book every few years in one sitting. I remember reading it aloud one summer day to my nephew David when he was an infant. If you don't mind lengthy narrative, I highly recommend it.
