This is the most underwhelming book I've read in the MHA series. It does a decent job of introducing new characters and tries to instigate the debate around the true society of this universe. The writers forgot about it after few pages and went back to how the characters and their antics. I liked the perspective but there wasn't enough of it. I get that what drives this series is "I want to be a hero!" attitude but they had real potential of stoping and exploring the universe from a non hero archetype view.

I enjoyed this volume, but I feel like I didn't connect with as many of the characters as I did at the beginning of the original series. But I really do like Knuckleduster, and I hope to see The Crawler and Pop Step develop more in the next installments. I also thought all of the random fandom references and cameos were amusing.

MHA spin-off, takes place before Deku’s story begins!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this spinoff as it’s written and illustrated by someone completely different than Horikoshi, but I utterly adored! The art is very reminiscent and it’s a really cool look at the hero world we don’t get to see in MHA. All our characters are post high school, Koichi and Pop barely at 19 but still, and it’s a really refreshing change from our main story. I also adore this look at vigilante-ism as we know how strict this society is about using quirks in public only if they’re legally trained as professional heroes. Here we have Koichi who has a slide quirk but can only activate if 3 parts of his body are in contact so he has to crouch, and similar to Deku he looks up to All Might and just wants to do his part to help, it’s precious. In the notes Furuhashi said he’s like Deku if Deku never met All Might, though at least he has a quirk. Then we have Knucklebuster who’s trained himself to fight with support items, but is actually quirkless, and immediately sees the good heart in Koichi and wants to team up with him, teach him how to fight and become the titular vigilantes. I love it, NGL. I know it’s technically wrong what they’re doing, but makes sense that the heroes can’t be everywhere at once and as long as these two are just apprehending these small town bad guys, who’re more frequent due to a quirk-enhancing drug, for the police, I’m down with it. We also meet Pop Star, a masked street performer who has quite a following and comes alive undercover with her songs and risqué outfit. She has a cute jump quirk and I already ship her and Koichi. I also adore that they all just basically moved into Koichi’s penthouse apartment in this rundown, abandoned building no question. Their dynamic is really cute and Koichi pretends to be put out by then barging in but clearly loves the company.

Also we got a sexy ass cameo from Aizawa

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. When I read the first chapter a while back, I really liked it and thought I'd be hooked. Now, reading the whole volume, I feel like this series lacks the OOMPH that MHA has. I do like Koichi and I LOVE that he's 19 years old. Like wow. But I'm not really feeling Master or Pop. Master is actually pretty smart but there's just something about his "knock people out then ask questions" attitude that I find uninteresting. And Pop, well, she's the eye candy so far

The plot is rather interesting, especially if you've read up to volume 14 of MHA (I can't help but want a crossover like OHMYGOD). Which reminds me, I read somewhere, that Illegals' Koichi is supposed to be Deku if he'd never met All Might and became a hero and I like seeing how alike the two are. There's even an illustration at the end of this volume done by Horikoshi and I just stared at it for a second because he drew Koichi like Deku.

Oh, the Aizawa and Mrs. Midoriya cameos were great! xD
