It was a cute story but definitely can tell that it was written a long long time ago. Unfortunately the characters didn’t have enough depth for my liking which made the story boring from time to time and it really took me a lot of effort to focus on what is happening in the book.

This was undoubtedly a ‘children’s book’ but by no means juvenile. The plot was still engaging and enjoyable, and the characters well thought out and unique each in their own right. Best of all, the vignettes if English pastoral life were delightful, and the descriptions of some of these scenes were at times heart-achingly beautiful.

Sweet and fun, a perfect springtime read aloud to start our mornings. I highly recommend the version with illustrations by Inga Moore. Her illustrations are magical. Each page was a delight. I don't think we would have enjoyed it nearly as much without her gorgeous and whimsical pictures.
