A surprisingly beautiful read. The characters are flawed real human beings. They have distinct personalities and strength. In the end I almost felt like they were family to me. The story was sweet, funny and interesting with an epic finale that could do the best superhero movies proud.

Another one of the middle-grade ones that normally would be tradpub under Ursula Vernon. This was a solidly enjoyable time, though I do feel like the pacing could have been better. I was left frustrated at the crow for a bit too long for my taste.

If you've read any of T. Kingfisher's books before, you know what you're getting into. This was a fun, adventurous little book. The author does quite well getting into the perspective of a child, and even though Rosa makes some maybe not so great decisions, they all make sense given her age and experience. The world-building was small but fascinating. I loved the idea of magical illuminations.

This is a cute Cozy story. A great pallet cleanser after reading a more serious book.

Very reminiscent of Diana Wynne Jones' "The Magicians of Caprona", which is a book I love - not sure if it's really YA, but it features a young protagonist with a child friendly storyline, so I'm classifying it that way. I love all of Kingfisher's books, and this was no exception.
