I don’t feel equipped to adequately review this collection from Jericho Brown, but it is brilliant and beautiful.

I liked the content of the poetry, but would have preferred a different format so everything could be discussed more at length.

Not a fan of the writing style. Most of the prose went over my head and I didn’t understand what was being said

I don't flatter myself to be a judge of poetry. I merely know when it resonates and when it does not. This poetry did. It took me awhile as I like to take my time to absorb poetry and because of the heavy themes these poems deal with including police brutality, sexual violence, and HIV.

Challenging, sad and reflective. These poems packed punches of anger and grief.

Some fav quotes:
"None of the beaten end up how we began." - part 1, duplex
"A poem is a gesture toward home." - part 1, duplex
"I'm not crossing to cross back. I'm set on something vast. It reaches long as the sea. I'm more than a conqueror, bigger than bravery. I don't march. I'm the one who leaps." - part 3, crossing

Holy shit this was amazing. I read it all in one sitting because I just couldn't stop reading. So many lines made me just sort of sit there staring at nothing, like, they were just stunning. I definitely want to read more of Brown's work.
