Delicate, haunting poems about loss and transformation undergirded by love, and violence contemplated while being mysteriously endured.

Another collection so purely readable that I know I need to return to it to really study his language, structure (and to glory more in its beauty).

These poems were rich with a quiet fire and emotion, and even the ones that didn't hit as hard definitely had me reflecting for a while before I ventured onto the next poem. Some pieces were a bit stronger than others but overall, I enjoyed this collection, and I LOVED the ode/nod to other favorite poets, Danez Smith and Ocean Vuong.

Favorite Poems:
  • Etymology
  • Anti-elegy
  • Aubade (this poem alone bumped this book to a 4 star, I love poems heavily featuring cats)
  • The Cure For What Ails You
  • Cento Between Ending and End

I really enjoyed this collection. The poems are kind of deceptively accessible. I appreciated the wry undercurrent of dark humor throughout and particularly liked the poems about family. The "[Black Feeling]" series is especially strong.

Book #3 for #TheSealeyChallenge (definitely need to return to this one later and go more in depth)

A really powerful collection. Kind of a rollercoaster of emotions, felt depressing and infuriating and loving and hopeful all at the same time. Not every poem stuck with me and I wasn't super captivated by the poet's use of form and structure, but there were some real beauties here. (the love poems, black feeling, anti-elegy, all my friends are sad and bright, etc)
