Veronica continues to be an anachronism with views so modern she would probably have been shunned in actual Victorian times. However, it's still a fun story as she and Stoker team up to solve a murder before the wrong person hangs. Along the way, they stumble upon a secret sex grotto (I kid you not) which was one of the more amusing, if completely outrageous, scenes in the book.

Even though the clues were discovered wayyy to coincidentally and the ending resolved itself too easily, I love the characters and would read the next book if only to see them again. And I admit the red herrings served their purpose.

This is the second book in the Veronica Speedwell series.

Set in London, 1887. “At the Curiosity Club, a ladies-only establishment for daring and intrepid women, Speedwell meets the Lady Sundridge, who begs her to take on an impossible task—saving society art patron Miles Ramsforth from execution. Ramsforth, accused of the brutal murder of his mistress, Artemisia, will face the hangman’s noose in a week’s time if the real killer is not found.”

Veronica and her “sidekick”, Stoker, are on the case! I can’t get enough of Raybourn’s Victorian mysteries.

Liked this one a lot! Probably more of a 4.5 for me. Found this a lot more fun than the first book of the series, probably since we already know the characters a bit (and yes I was chanting "kiss! Kiss! Kiss" about the main characters). I'm definitely interested in the rest of the series.

Loved this second installment of the Veronica Speedwell mysteries. Raybourn's writing and creativity are top notch. Entertaining, creative, just fun to get to know these characters as multilayered individuals. Liked this better than the first...looking forward to the next.

As enjoyable as the first. It's a minor issue that "Lady Wellie" is by far the most fascinating character, because at times I'd rather be following her. Still, a solidly well done story.
