Another case of a book I would probably not have picked up if it had not been on the 1001 list. It is quite unusual for the villain is the title of the book, and although Fantomas is hinted at and talked about for the first half of the book, you don't find out who he is or if he is real until the second half. He is in fact a clever man and always manages to stay on step ahead of the detective (Jurve), although I could see the end coming. My only negative comment (and its not really a bad one) would be that there is a huge amount of characters and with Fantomas and Jurve disguising themselves on a regular basis it took some concentration to keep a track of who was who. An enjoyable read although I'm not sure I will be heading out to get the rest of this very large series, however if one was to land in my lap, I would certainly give it a read.

I have just finished this book and let me tell you this...i want a sequel real bad.
I loved the style of writing that was used(in french),it was very easy to follow and i rapidly got attached to the characters.Even though i share the same thought of many, which is that:Fantomas actually kills without any concrete reason...but still,i loved Juve as a character,he was always so intreseting and very clever.
I like these kind of books because they teach me how to think in some ways.

truly a great book! the twists kept the reader invested in the story, it is one of those pieces that make you wish that the villian was either able to prove their innocence or escape. the conclusions at which Juve arrived to were unexpected, interesting, and surprising. even now that i have finished the book, i have yet to believe that Gurn, Fantômas, and Étienne are the same person: it would be a hell of a plot twist if they weren’t.
cannot wait to read the next one!

Wow! That's my thought at the ending.
I was hoping for more pages!
Though it started dreary, the pace started to alter as the murder began.
I'm totally not familiar with the author and this is randomly picked. I'm surprised by the unexpected twist. I am happy to have read such piece of art.
