I never thought I would laugh as much as I did with a horror graphic novel.

I haven’t explored Monstress, so this is my first Liu title. There were some topics that were personally rather triggering, but that is for me to do a better job researching in the future.

I am definitely interested to pick up book two and see how this world continues to develop. Seeing as my jaw was mostly on the floor throughout with such intense images and twists in the story, I think I need closure at some point.

If you’re looking for a horror graphic novel that will leave you speechless, here you go.

This was an interesting introduction to the series and characters. The art is hauntingly beautiful and so detailed. I have so many questions that I hope get answered in the subsequent volumes!

I’m fascinated by this world and these characters. I have so many questions!! I can’t wait for the next two books.

I loved the art style. Some of the horror scenes reminded me of Junji Ito which was very cool. I liked the soft feeling the coloring gave—despite the ominous subject.

"It's dangerous not to care for the small things that need you."

Milly and Billy are struggling to keep their restaurant doors open, struggling with pleasing their overbearing mother, and overall just wondering why life doesn't seem to be going right. Told with flashbacks to their parents' time in Hong Kong before immigrating, The Night Eaters tackles diaspora, racism, and family values in a bloody little package.

I have never been happier I picked up a graphic novel with no idea what I was getting into. This was FANTASTIC. I love anything with horror and when I picked up the hardcover of this one day I knew I wanted to try something a little different. This entire piece is stunning, there is so much to look at in the art and pick apart in the way the art ties in with the script - this is just a really well done graphic novel.

I absolutely refuse to give anything away about this, but my jaw dropped multiple times. It's gory, with on page body mutilation and blood, but it all fits in a visceral and disgusting way. I'm so excited to read volume two when it comes out and I'm so happy to have a gorgeous hard copy (with undercover art!) on my graphic novel shelf.

Content warnings: Gore (HEAVY), Blood (heavy), Body horror (heavy), Racism (mild on page), Violence (mild), Vomit (couple scenes)

Interesting and definitely has potential. Though it didn't quite get there in this first volume.

Emotionally unavailable mother but there is a reason for it. Basically it might be not a good idea to read if you are very sensitive to tiger mom but like I said, there is a mostly rational explanation for mother's behavior and the comic does not try to downplay the effects it has on the children now as grown ups.
