This was a good read. I was more invested in the over-arching plot than Regin and Declan's story. Nix, as always, was enjoyable. I was really surprised by how little grovel there was, but the loophole at the end was interesting.

Expectations are everything I guess! I didn’t love the central romance, but the B-plot with Lothaire and Thad was A+ chefs kiss.
Regin is a Valkyrie and Declan is a reincarnated Berserker.
Notes: takes place on a remote island + NOLA. Both Regin and Declan are white immortals.

I really loved this one.
I don’t generally like dark romances. I do like darker novels that explore the gritty side of being human, or in this case immortal.
!! Content warnings abound, so approach this one carefully. It puts the torture in Torture Island and our hero has a more traumatic past represented more on-page than others in the series.
Declan Chase is the reincarnation of a Berserker, Aidan the Fierce, but he doesn’t know it yet, and for twenty years he’s been involved with the Order, which works to subvert all Loreans. Ok, they torture and vivisect them to learn about them. While they are conscious. And Declan is in charge. Yikes. You’ve been warned.
And yet, Declan’s redemption arc worked for me.
Regin is a Valkyrie whose skin literally glows. She’s the fun-loving video-game playing Valkyrie, but we learned two books ago that she’s willing to sacrifice her own childhood to save her sister Lucia. We learn in this book that she’s tough as nails, too. She stands up to Declan, and proves once again just how strong Valkyries are.
Plus we have the best cast of side characters, especially Thad.
Beyond the intense character exploration, the thing I like best about this book is the way Cole progresses the multiple storylines - the romance with Regin and Declan, the build up to Lothaire’s story (next book!), and the increasing heat of the Accession.
Honestly, this is the first book I finished and said “Yes, I would read this again on its own” and it’s the first one I gave 5 stars.
