Cody’s life has always been rough and full of undesirable people. Real life monsters if you will. Bullies at school and a broken, tuned out father. All of this left him feeling like he never fit in. Even at work he couldn’t escape. A couple of terrifying events happened there which left Cody even more uneasy.
Shortly after leaving his job Cody begins to discover what is really happening within him. Will he embrace this change or absolutely refuse it?

Becoming was my intro to Milliron’s work. Already I’m captivated by his writing style. Every word, every paragraph provides such rich and vivid detail. Always a favorite of mine to be placed right in the story. From the start of the book, I felt an attachment to Cody. You go through the emotions and experiences with him which is another thing I really enjoy in a book. Fantastic writing and characters. I can’t wait to jump into the next book.

" My heart was a fragile porcelain vase, which my father had just smashed against the wall. "

"Gods, monsters, and humans. You're all just paper people caught in a wildfire you don't even know about. It's okay; I understand. Sometimes it's easier to sleep at the wheel."

There are those inner demons that lurk inside us, experiences that crush our souls and linger there for ages.

Cody has gone through a tough life, from being bullied to grieving and trying to make a life of his own at a young age. When a terrifying event happens at his place of work and he loses even more, what lurks inside of him begins to surface. He must learn to control it, to accept it, and trust those who are like him; for he is Becoming.

A combination of humanity shifting to mythological creatures and the origins of old. A battle within ones existence and without, learning to accept both for what they are and follow where the path leads.

There is some beautiful prose written throughout, the kind that had me going back just to reread a sentence. I enjoyed the main story and the eventual unfolding of the secrets that lie within, leading up to what was truly happening.

An all around captivating story of what lurks beneath the surface.
