The selection itself is decent and Rilke's poetry is godlike, however, the translations provided by C. F. MacIntyre are absolutely awful, stilted and awkward, bearing none of the originals' mercurial flow. I had to re - translate all the poems myself as I was reading them (and my German is not as fluent to do it casually), so reading this book ended up being way more laborious than intended. I strongly recommend looking for other collections, because Rilke deserves to be represented in all his glory.

I think this is a great poetry collection, I love that it provides additional info for each poem that helps discover the themes in Rilke's poetry. I think I prefer the poems from Das Buch der Bilder, I found many that spoke to me, my favourite being The Neighbor. It definitely made me want to check out more of Rilke's work.

It seems impossible to give a star rating to a poetry book; some poems really spoke to me (I especially dwelled on the very first one,"Initiation,). Others, not as much. But my first foray into Rilke definitely intrigued me.
