Fair warning - this book broke me. It is devastating & I cried long after it was over. Trigger warning - everything. I really enjoyed this, despite the way that it made me feel. It was beautifully written and I felt so connected to the characters, both good and bad. It’s such a heavy read though and I don’t recommend it if you aren’t in a good place emotionally. You’ll need to read something very lighthearted after this one.

we get 3 povs. one from now,4 months ago and 15 years ago. we follow two charcters point of views (lucian and catherine). and all we know at the start is something traumatic happened and now catherine is in a psychological silence, and we get to explore and figure out why. the execution of the book alone was incredible. i cannot express how much the characters touched me. i have been in a reading slump for months, and this book really pulled me out of it.   Truly This is one of my favorite books so far this year. I felt so much reading it. The heartache, the regret. Every word lingered, and I was the protagonist for a while, understanding them completely. The book kept me wondering until the end, and it just made sense to me. I will remember it for a long time, knowing that it touched me to the core.  My heart ached for Lucian and Catherine. this book will stay in my heart forever.

Wanted to like it, the way the main character was in an institution all mute and unavailable in the present day and yet had this strong internal dialogue that seemed very sane, but as the story went on (and the internal dialogue didn't flipping stop!) and the twists rolled out I felt they weren't worth the wait or build-up and likewise, the main character's muteness and disconnection from the world felt very unbelievable. However, this is no reflection on the author or the book itself as I just do generally struggle with this genre that seems to have too much inner dialogue that doesn't just ignore the whole "show don't tell" approach to writing it practically sticks up two fingers at it. It's just not my cup of tea I think... so I should probably not get tempted by 99p offers on Kindle - that is the lesson to be learnt here!
