I wondered why, if Poe wrote three short stories that essentially invented detective fiction, do only two of them appear in his most well-known collection? After hunting down the neglected second story, I now see why. This is not so much a story as it is an intentionally thinly veiled true crime analysis, and it is written in an incredibly tiresome style. As prose, it has far more in common with the Greek philosophers than the penny dreadfuls. Still, in reading these stories, I am gaining a much deeper appreciation for and understanding of the works they inspired.
