I stand by my earlier judgement that most of Lovecraft's horror doesn't work for me, because it is solely based on xenophobia and lack of imagination. The blobs with many eyes, crab- or plant-like aliens, etc. don't do much for me, either. Even the elements I like - Cthulhu, the old god sleeping at the bottom of the sea, using dreams and madness as weapons, rural coastal towns, secret cults and ill-intentioned merpeople - I do because of their possibilities rather than what Lovecraft's close-minded, prejudiced and racist protagonists manage to do with them. Still, I'm glad I finally finished closing this hole in my literary knowledge and would like to keep seeing how other authors and filmmakers use this.

While at times monotonously repetitive (especially at the end), this shit busted. The language was beautiful and there were plenty of genuinely eerie moments. The Colour out of Space and The Mound were two that really stuck out to me.
