Het verhaal:
Een beginnende agent in Rome stuit door stom toeval op een seriemoordenaar. De 1e moord wordt gepleegd in het Vaticaan. De politie van Rome mag zich er niet mee bemoeien. Nic Costa, oudgediende politieagent, bemoeit zich echter wel met de zaak in het Vaticaan en stuit op het feit dat een historicus meer met de moorden te maken heeft dan Nic dacht. Maar het Vaticaan houdt zich achter de muren verboren en vertelt niets.
Een goed verhaal, wat spanning oproept. Je merkt goed dat er tegen muren opgelopen wordt omdat er cultuur verschil is en dat het Vaticaan zijn eigen regels heeft.
Hewson schrijft lekker, maar ik vraag mij af of hij dit in al zijn boeken kan bewaren. Het is een grote opgave om dit boek zo te schrijven en de verschillende culturen te combineren.
Het is gewaagd om het Vaticaan te beschrijven en het komt er ook niet goed vanaf. Maar daarom juist best wel goed.
Drie sterren is het meeste wat ik er voor kan geven.
Misschien dat ik het boek ooit eens opnieuw moet gaan lezen om te kijken of het dan anders zal zijn.

Sold as a thriller as good as Da Vinci Code, I was weary of it. I hate the Da Vinci Code but I had come across reviews that were negative because it wasn't anything like the Da Vinci Code except for the Vatican and there's a painter involved in it aspect.
The plot has a lot to offer. A fallen cardinal involved in very shady financial transactions, a serial killer with an obsession with martyrs, a young academic with a sulfuric past and two police detectives a burnout older man and a younger cop with an obsession with Caravaggio.
The plot moves slowly and has some surprising little twists some you see coming a mile away others that hit you from the sideline. It's not a Da Vinci clone and that's a very good thing.
It's not an exceptional thriller, just an okay one set in Rome at the height of a heatwave, where the people running the show are in an another country right in the heart of the city. First in a series of novel featuring Nic Costa the young cop. I'll check out the second one.
