I was completely drawn in by the cover. The illustrations through the story were absolutely stunning! It is what made the book enjoyable to me. I went into this book thinking it was a lighter, more tame novel about a child finding her brother. Overall, that's the type of book it was. It also had much darker themes. Themes I wasn't expecting with how cutesy the cover and the age of Prue and Curtis. The writing was captivating and simple. It's definitely perfect for the target audience, I believe. Now, the reason that it wasn't as highly rated for me was that it didn't keep my interest, and the darker themes were unexpected for a middle grade type novel. It's still a good story, and the illustrations are beautiful.
Minor: Death and Gun violence

reread review is that i was in the exact right headspace for this book (having been in an on and off state of fixation with the decemberists for the past 7 ish months and fixation with carson ellis's art for 5 of those) and i enjoyed myself quite a bit. was not as fun as the whiz mob and rthe grenadine kid :( SAD! but i do like these illustrations better. i loved the Wood a lot and i also loved getting to force all my friends to look at the illustrations whenever they asked me what i was reading at lunch :). it did drag a tiny bit in a few places but thats ok. one thing i wish is that i remembered my thoughts from when i read half of this as a kid (i didnt finish it for reasons i can't remember but are probably along the lines of i checked something out from the library and got more excited about that and also it had a due date and this didn't) and my old review felt a bit too much like i was bowing to all the negative reviews and also my friend who hates this book but actually i enjoyed it a lot! sorry for the ramble im not so good at writing reviews sometimes.

LOVE the cover. world is quite cool. i do think prue doesn't really seem like a 12 year old. also i started this like a billion times as a kid and wasn't able to actually finish until i read it when i was 15, rather past the target audience. maybe if i read it right now when i have been listening to the decemberists i would enjoy it more though.
