Such a fascinating and well written anthology of stories. It was even better reading it a second time through now that I’m older and can appreciate some of the messages even more. Very dark and at times sad, but all of the stories are beautiful and meaningful in their own ways.

Mostly enjoyable. Nothing was truly terrible, though I would say the two vampire stories were the worst (natch--I hate vampires). But nothing was really that great either. Ah well, not every book can change your life.

The world needs more anthologies. This one was fantastic. Loved Patrick Ness' The Whole Demoning thing and Sarah Rees Brennan's Wings in the morning but especially loved Paolo Bacigalupi's Kraken story.

Moriabe's Children / Paolo Bacigalupi --
Old souls / Cassandra Clare --
Ten rules for being an intergalactic smuggler (the successful kind) / Holly Black --
Quick hill / M.T. Anderson --
The diabolist / Nathan Ballingrud --
This whole demoning thing / Patrick Ness --
Wings in the morning / Sarah Rees Brennan *** - Conceptually good and the self realisation of being a monster was realistic, but I didn't care about most of the characters.
Left foot, right / Nalo Hopkinson --
The Mercurials / G. Carl Purcell --
Kitty Capulet and the invention of underwater photography / Dylan Horrocks ** - I would have liked to know more about the myth and creature. The h's passion for photography was interesting but the plot development was rushed. A novella might have helped flesh out the story better.
Son of abyss / Nik Houser --
A small wild magic / Kathleen Jennings *** - Cute light comic strip. I'd definitely like to know more about this myth which was so different from djinn.
The new boyfriend / Kelly Link *** - The teenage mean girl shenanigans kept me entertained and proved that humans can be monsters too.
The woods hide in plain sight / Joshua Lewis --
Mothers, lock up your daughters because they are terrifying / Alice Sola Kim

Five stars for Wings in the Morning. Not a fan of the rest (well except Holly Black’s story I liked that too)

Wonderful set of monster stories, some I love less, some I love immensely. Best part is that none of them feel remotely similar despite having very similar themes.
