This was my first book of Evanovich's. So many are always singing her praises, so I thought I would jump in at the beginning of a new series instead of trying to play catch up on a longer running series.

I feel underwhelmed by this story. Is it just me? What am I missing that so many love about this author? I found my self bored and disinterested too much throughout this book. I can honestly say, I must have daydreamed while reading it. I already forgot some of it. I am missing pieces of the story.

I couldn't really connect to any of the characters. They felt flat and dull. The story itself had a little action and intrigue. Nothing to get too excited about though.

I can appreciate this book though. In some ways, I see where people like her writing. It's very unique. It, unfortunately, just wasn't for me.

This book is unfortunately flat in so many aspects - the characters, the prose, the humour, the romance. There's also a real problem which is very noticeable when listening to the audiobook, where entire lines of action will be shortly thereafter repeated by characters in their dialogue with others, to "catch them up" on what happened. Not something the audience needs, and it happened often enough that it got seriously annoying.
I really wanted to like this one, but I think I'll just go re-read some Stephanie Plum.

If you are here because you loved the funny, witty sometimes misguided but always doing her best attitude of Stephanie Plum, this is not it! Good mystery and story for someone who enjoys a boss babe being a badass, not for a reader who wants a spunky, awkward, sarcastic but well meaning heroine.

it was to cliche and certain parts dragged on longer than they needed to. also the character was written to be a smart strong female but she never put smarted anyone and the villain was more thought out then the main character.
I skimmed through the last couple chapters. also the characters were supposed to fall back in love with each other and it was the most bland relationship I’ve ever read.

This is a light palate cleanser. And that's all. It's a blend of Romancing the Stone, Stephanie Plum, and Indiana Jones, so you'd think I'd love it. But it was just too breezy and superficial. Evanovich plunges you into the action pretty quicky, and normally that would be fine. But because it's the first book in the series, you don't know the characters, and with all the running around you never get to know them very well. So you don't really care about them, and therefore it's difficult to care about the book as well.

DNF @ 19%

I was so excited to get an e-ARC of Janet Evanovich's new book! I generally avoid books set in the jungle, but I've read the entire Stephanie Plum series and already knew that I enjoyed Janet Evanovich's writing.

I have a *severe* phobia of danger noodles (yes, to the point where I can't even speak or say their actual name), and at first I was so thrilled because the first 'danger' scene involved a panther (yay cats!). Unfortunately, at 19% my phobia was absolutely ambushed. Usually I can just skip the short parts where the-things-that-shall-not-be-named are mentioned, but it started off with a horrifying "surprise" and then just kept going and going... pages and pages of... terror.

Caution!: Definitely avoid this book if you have a danger noodle phobia as I do!

If this book wasn't set in the jungle I'm sure I would have enjoyed it!

Review by my daughter:
I'm like WOOOOOOOOOOOOO YAY NEW BOOK BY JANET EVANOVICH!! YAY! And I got the e-ARC from NetGalley!! Double YAY!!

BUT! Instead of it being a nice great book like a treasure hunt in the jungle with panther friends and sinking sand there's...

DANGER NOODLES!

You're reading. Their in the jungle and a squeezer is like "HEY THERE FELLAS LOOKIE AT MY COWBOY HAT IMA TRY AND KILL ONE OF Y'ALL!" And tries to kill a man. So run away la la la then its like okay good there'll be no more.

Walking through the jungle la la la having fun looking for treasure. THEN.

A PIT OF NOODLES!!

THEY ALL SCREAM "Salut! Nous sommes des serpents et nous sommes super effrayants. Nous avons loué cette fosse pour effrayer les gens et leur donner des cauchemars pour toujours!" (Hello! We are snakes and we're super scary. We rented this pit so we can scare people and give them nightmares forever!)

Now you run out of the jungle screaming and hug your cat after burning the book the end.
