I just don’t get the appeal of these books yet. Aside from it being a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, which is fine in and of itself, the story cherry-picks from lots of existing books (Hunger Games is an obvious one) and Feyre is actually kind of annoying. Characters repeatedly warn her to not do the thing, she does the thing anyway, and suffers through the consequences until one of those characters (always male) rescues her. She’s portrayed as a tough sexy Cool Girl badass but actually largely lacks agency and/or uses her agency to do stupid stuff that men have to save her from. And speaking of sexy, there are a few scenes where Feyre is put through sexually degrading situations and those always had an undertone of voyeurism that didn’t sit well with me.

I wasn’t a huge fan of how violent and gory it got towards the end. But that’s about it for what I didn’t like. This book wasn’t what I expected, though I’m not quite sure what I did expect from it. I really like Feyre as a character and narrator. The plot was engaging and moved fast enough. I feel like fantasy books can sometimes get bogged down or stuck a bit in their own plots, but this one didn’t drag. And the logic of it all - the curse, the magic, the villain’s evil reasons, etc - made sense to me. Tamlin was very sneaky for still finding ways to tell Feyre what was going on in his realm. And the parts with the summer solstice and her paintings were so cute. There’s something about Rhysand though that makes me think not everything with Feyre and Tamlin is going to work out…

I know I’m like 10 years late to reading this but I was totally fine being ~not like the other book girlies~ and refusing to read this series because everyone else was obsessed with it. And for what? To act like that somehow made me better? Perhaps for a time it soothed me to roll my eyes at talk of faerie romance and all the tedious world building of courts and magic and such… except why? Literally why. Why do I do this to myself. I love Twilight, The Hunger Games—I jumped on those bandwagons early on, so why did I put this one off for so long just to inevitably devour it??

Yeah fantasy isn’t usually my thingggggg but people change!!!

✨ she’s a High Fae girly now!!!!! ✨ (Please read this next line in that one voice from Shrek) ANYTHING FOR YOU, MY LORD!!!

Anyway, Feyre is an awesome protagonist and I’m so looking forward to what next awaits her in Prythian…
