Oh boy, so many things to say here. First of all, this was the first series in over 10 years that I DNF'd (never got past the first book). The writing is mediocre at best, the descriptions are trite and cliche, and it reads like fanfiction written by a middle-schooler. The main character, Feyre, is whiny, unlikable, and overall bland and annoying, she reads like a textbook self-insert mary sue who is the best at everything, except being girly because she's "not like other girls". The plot makes no real sense, and the story takes forever to move forward, usually with more focus on the smutty romance bits than the actual storyline. This story has just taken Katniss from the Hunger Games, poorly reskinned her, and dumped her in a wannabe dark and raunchy beauty and the beast ripoff. I could maybe see how it could be enjoyable for a horned up middle schooler/ early high schooler, but this book is not for anyone who wants actual substance to their stories.

As a Black American, I don't reccomend this book to other Black people or other oppressed groups because there is so much talk about ~humans~ being dominated and being slaves while all the humans in the book are white. It's definitely one of those fantasy books that was and is still a reality for folks today. That being said I did find that once I started I did want to know what happened at the end

This was wattpad level trash and the sex scenes weren't even worth it. Also SJM ruined fae lore. Fae are supposed to be epic and whimsical, all she did was make them sus

I understand why this series took off, its easy to read, great world building but that's it. It's not the fairy erotica everyone says it is. But reading this in 2022 - nothing ground breaking or new.
Could've been an normal beauty and the beast retelling but the author has other plans towards the end.

The major beats are Beauty and the Beast, more or less. For readers particularly attuned to gendered terminology, the terms “fe/male” show up a lot, sometimes in places they don’t necessarily need to be (e.g., “a towering male figure” when it could just be “a towering figure,” etc.; these terms are shorthand for things that can be described otherwise, with thought and care). I can understand the use of these terms insofar as they refer to the “sex” of beings that aren’t human, but they did throw me out of the story occasionally in ways that were annoying, in part because they often operate on assumptions about bodily makeup and gender that I don’t ascribe to. Once I got a feel for how these terms work insofar as they differentiate faerie/human characteristics, I was okay. But I thought it might be helpful for other enby/gender nonconforming folx to know.

What this book does extraordinarily well is establish a broader nexus of character connections and a wider range for the plot. I don’t think I’ve ever read a first book that set me up so well for the sequels before, and I will read the entire series.

Wow. Okay so I almost put this book down on a multitude of occasions but I'm really glad I didn't.

A big chunk of the book is very slow paced but damn that ending those last few chapters were just so good. I was unable to put the book down!

I also like the way that it didn't really end on a cliff hanger like most series do. So if you aren't a person that enjoys reading series you can still read this book and be content with that as an ending for the story as a whole.
