Fun characters in this one, but on the flip side the regime is a bit too much of a caricature. The ending is also kinda too easy.

One fault all these Jedi Apprentice books suffer from is not being long enough. This really hampers the complexity of the plot and the development of the characters. Because it’s a children’s book, the description isn’t very sophisticated either. I have to say I didn’t particularly like the plot of this book, but it was a nice twist to see the Jedi hijacked and sidetracked from their original mission instead of everything going to plan. The plot was kind of implausible – it’s largely set in just the capital city of Phindar and we only see four rebels – we’re expected to believe this brings down a planet-wide autocracy? The antagonists were a little too stereotyped, and I just couldn’t connect with the protagonists, apart from the Jedi, of course. Unfortunately, Guerra and Paxxi were the reason why I felt no sympathy for the Phindian plight. I don’t know how, but the author managed to create a pair of characters even more annoying than Jar Jar Binks. The bad guys, Baftu, Terra, and the Syndicat followers, were way too stereotyped. However the scenes at the beginning with Obi-Wan’s birthday were an enjoyable touch.

5 out of 10 (for a children's book).

Another fun and exciting romp with Qui Gon and young Obi Wan. Although these books are simple in their execution, they are not afraid to give an age appropriate (for the target audience) glance at more serious topics, and this adventure was no different. At times exciting, funny, delightful, harrowing, and sad, this story was an enjoyable and emotional ride that I am happy to have taken.
