The heroine has overt autistic traits (and possibly OCD traits? it’s unclear what the author’s intent was) but the manner in which her neurodivergence is handled was vaguely… flat. Like a caricature rather than a real person. I’m not sure if the author had a sensitivity reader/discussed what it’s like to be autistic with actual autistic people. Fantastic premise that would have made 5 stars if neurodivergence was handled with better care.michelles_book_nook's review against another edition

It felt more like a character study than a mystery which is what saved it for me.
I loved the main character, she’s what kept me reading, and my guess is that she’s on the spectrum, however, what bothered me was that it was never really talked about or stated that she is. She knew she was “different” and it’s talked about how she struggles with social cues, facial expressions, etc, but never stated why. It felt like a missed opportunity to come out and state that she’s on the spectrum and get some autism rep going.
The pacing was also a bit off like a lot happened in the end but not much in the beginning and middle.
Those are all my gripes with the book and because of Molly (the mc) this is a solid 4 star read. If she wasn’t as well realised and thought out this would’ve probably been a 3 star read.
