This was my second book in this series and I enjoyed most of it.
I liked the way the plot was evolving with a culprit closer to the police than they thought and how many investigations converged.
I was peeved by the emphasis put on the look females characters  out of the police force and the consumption of alcohol.
Overall, there was more to like than be peeved about.

Pretty much immediately DNF when he used how her pubes were cut as a way for us as the reader to realise that this was the girl who’s life we’d been following as she was being murdered.

This is the second book in the Roy Grace series and picks up the day after the events that took place in the first book, [b:Dead Simple|703353|Dead Simple (Roy Grace, #1)|Peter James|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1388692645s/703353.jpg|689644]. Apart from the personal life of the characters and their working relationships, this book is not a continuance of [b:Dead Simple|703353|Dead Simple (Roy Grace, #1)|Peter James|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1388692645s/703353.jpg|689644]. It's a whole new set of rather gruesome crimes that Roy and his team have to investigate. A lot of the story follows an innocent man, in love with this wife, for all her faults, and his family who inadvertently wanders into the world of snuff movies. And who Roy and his team have to race to save from a truly gruesome end for the pure entertainment of degenerate low life scum.

A good read, even if a bit slow at the start.

Detective Superintendent Roy Grace has to solve a disturbing murder whilst protecting an innocent eye witness.

I enjoyed this instalment of the Roy Grace series better than the first. However, it’s important to mention firstly that I feel like it’s definitely a product of its time with the language that is used, for example racism, ableist language, offensive language around mental health and derogatory language towards women, despite being republished in 2019 so these examples should have been removed from the book.

It had an incredibly slow start - I feel like the action didn’t start until halfway, which considering this book is 544 pages long, that’s a long time to wait for any action. When the action did finally appear, I found the book hard to put down. It had quite a bit of waffle that could have been cut out. Although I do hope that in the later instalments, we get to know the other characters more as I find the MC Roy quite insufferable. There’s so many things that he does that annoys me. I loved how vividly the setting is described, which makes me feel like it’s a character.

⚠️ CWs: cursing, alcohol use, blood, person with alcohol use disorder, ableist and derogatory language, racism, murder, homophobia and slur, sexual situations, fire, body horror, child abuse, physical assault, sexual harassment, offensive language about mental health; mentions vomiting, cheating, prostitution, rape of a minor and paedophilia ⚠️
