I am a complete sucker for stories that include cooking. Cooking is creative and it's really fun to see how the characters show their personalities and skills as they compete. It's also a story of immigration and family expectations. Cici gets to know a few peers and while many things they do appear to be quite different, she sees that the essence of what they do is often the same.

This will likely appeal to fans of Shanon Hale, Victoria Jamieson and Raina Telgemeier graphic novels.

While the illustrations aren't quite my usual style, this book was fun and touching.

So cute! No matter who you are, it’s easy to feel isolated from other people because you feel you grew up differently than they did. However, this graphic novel does a great job of showing that you don’t have to be exactly like the people around you. All cultures have some form of similarities, we just have to come to know one another so that we can find those likenesses.

A fantastic graphic story! When Cici immigrates to America from Taiwan she is focused at first on what she is losing, most importantly her close connection with her grandmother. Some things quickly fall into place for her however like some good friendships. When she sees a poster for a cooking contest she finds way to explore a skill that she always had as well as learn many things about the culture of her new home. The cooking contest brings a fun dose of drama and the dishes and spices are complex enough to entertain budding foodies.
