Oh yes - the joy of the second book of a trilogy - a world that’s been built in the first book, and the anticipation of still more to come.
Each book of this trilogy can certainly be read individually.  The author is careful to ensure that no critical information is missing, using any reiteration of plot or character to build more interest, more complexity.
And this is a complex book - especially as it looks at cabals, outsider/insider dynamics and friendships and alliances.  It is told with no over finger wagging - rather the author is an observer for the reader, always remembering her history and her unique understanding of what she experiences and sees.
I found it even more engrossing than the first; and put it down, very eager to move to the third.

I enjoyed it in the main but I felt some sections were a bit too protracted, whereas other areas were rushed through. Also I felt some of the characters lacked some depth. Though it ended with a lot of loose ends, and I enjoyed it enough to reach out and read the final book in thr trilogy.

I wish I could rate this a bit higher, especially considering the EPIC cliffhanger, but, I did feel like I mostly slogged through a big portion of it. We still have El, who is as snarky as ever, narrating the story for us, but I think because we covered a whole year in one book that we missed out on a lot of things that could have been detailed. El grows in character, there's friendship and just all around positivity, which sounds funny considering the circumstances, but maybe that's part of why I was like, ok...I suppose I'm like Orion in that respect. Speaking of Orion, he almost dropped off in this book, which made me sad because I think he's cute, but it's okay because I got my Orion doses restored towards the end. I can't wait for next year, which is when I hope the next book will be out! Lots to look forward to
