A beautiful collection of narratives and memories, of how a trauma crosses the boundaries of generations and how the way it’s dealt with matters. As is often the case with short story collections, though, that not all chapters sparked as much to me.

This was the story of two enslaved sisters. Unless enslaved tale that I read was  “The Prophets” and that story was a lot. I don’t think that I will be reading any more, following this. Story was beautifully written, and I have no complaints from the author. As an African-American woman., these stories are hard to hear - in the depths that the author decided to reach.

This book was gifted to me by my friend Emily and it has sat on my shelf for a couple of years. I was hesitant to pick it up as I was a little intimidated due to the subject matter. Homegoing is a multi-generational story following two branches of a family tree through time. Each subsequent set of 2 chapters follows the next generation from each of the branches. The story starts in Ghana in the 1700s with Maame and follows two of her children, who have very different experiences, and their eventual descendants all the way until the present day. Once I started this I could not put it down. I was so intrigued and just felt compelled to continue reading to find out what the next generation would bring. The ending ties things up very nicely and I was left with a book hangover. I will be thinking about this one for a long time to come.

This book counts for Popsugar 2023 for a book from a celebrity book club list and for the Magical Readathon Autumn Equinox 2023 for a Q in Conjuration for a book set in a different culture/country than mine.
