I was a princess. A mermaid. A twin.
I am a witch. A human. A rebel.
And I have only just begun.

The guard's smile cracks, and I'm not surprised. Men can always bond over the objectification of women.

Neutrality isn't a shield; it's simply a statement others can choose to ignore.

Men always prefer titles that make them feel important. Anything else is a lie.

I was expecting to like this even less than the first one, since a lot of reviewers felt that way. However, I liked this a LOT more! I thought it was a compelling story and the suspense of the war(s) was carried out well.

This series is still the best retelling I've read so far. Not really into the ending though and how things turned out between the characters but Evie is still the best villain/hero for me. Loved the first book more than this, but I always do.

This is the sequel to the Sea Witch, which follows Runa, who has followed her twin sister Alia as a human on land to try and save her from becoming sea foam. Both sisters visit Evie, now known as the sea witch, who is trapped in her lair by the sea king. This story felt confused to me as there is a time jump and takes place during the world war, with reference to cars and uboats. It jarred me slightly as the first book felt more wholly fantasy. I think on reflection, you could stop after the first book and not really feel like you're missing anything. Recommend to those that really enjoyed the story and want more of the same. For me, average.
