I picked City of Secrets up from my local library. I admit I definitely judge a book by it's cover and this cover did not grab me - but seeing as the author was local, I decided to give it a try.

The story is set in a dystopian society where dragons and gargoyles come alive at night, there are two rivals ruling opposite ends of the city who you don't want to cross.

Letty Parker is a 12 year old girl who sells meat pies to make her living, she lives alone in an attic but has a small and trusty group of friends. Jeb, Mango and a nephilim that watches over her called Gabriel.

Letty's step mother sends a letter to alert her that her sister - Violet, has gone missing, along with the majority of children in the city. Letty is furious when she realises the Runners (police that look for missing children) won't do anything because it's not about the rich children, and sets a plan to kidnap a rich girl to make the Runners panic.

Letty becomes close to Hepzibah and together they walk straight into the trap of the ones harbouring the children in a desperate attempt to get them out.

I found this story well written and the characters were explained in depth and likeable. However, the story did not really grip me and wasn't really right for my preferences.
