Any book about child abuse is disturbing and horrendous. Leigh Byrne's book states that it is based on a true story but it's unclear what "based on" means.
While the events in the story are incredibly sad and disgraceful -- no child deserves this sort of treatment -- the writing feels distant from the experience as though the narrator is detached from it. This is the reason I have only given the book ***½. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. And the only thing I can put my finger on is this sense of disconnection.
The book also seems to finish hurriedly with little focus on what happens to Tuesday in the long term. I have noted that there is a follow-up book (Call Me Cockroach) which looks like it does cover this, and I will consider reading it in the future some time.
