I've read this 4 times now. It's gotten better each time. A deathless song, itself.

I read this one again at the insistence of a friend and even after more than a gap of 12 years, this book and Fitzgerald's writing still enraptures me, mesmerizes me, and thrills me.

Jay Gatsby, undoubtedly, one of the best characters I've come across in literature. But the story is more of Nick Carraway's - his narration, the way his life intersects Gatsby's, and the tumultous adventure that follows.

But what makes TGG such a good read is not the story but Fitzgerald's beautiful writing. The words flow and swirl on the pages and magically transport you to the setting. The characters are dazzling. The words twist and enthrall to capture a story that at times is depressing but captivating nonetheless.

I realized TGG is a book that ages well. I remember loving it when I first read it 12 years ago but upon reading again, I've realized how easy it is to fall in love with it again. And while people will insist, this isn't Fitzgerald's best work, all I'll say is this - that doesn't matter. Just read Fitzgerald's words.....they are everything!

“Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead.”

"I hope she'll be a fool - that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.""

A beautiful book with such moving prose...

It's been so long since I read this, I hardly remembered a thing before picking it up again for book club.
I love to hate the characters, the setting and descriptions are gorgeous, and Fitzgerald frequently has the most beautiful nuggets of phrase hidden in the prose. Truly a classic, I understand why my honors English teacher had us read this sophomore year.
