Agree fully with all the reviews that this feels like a really, really long magazine article. There wasn’t nearly enough for any sort of book here but the author sort of pieced multiple biographies together. The history of dams in Alabama and life insurance in the US, while interesting anecdotes, kill any flow the book has and feel like blatant padding to get the story to book length. Also a lot of bouncing around from biography to speculation and editorial.
At the end of the day, it’s not a bad read but the book seems to have no idea what it actually wants to be.

Part true crime, part biography of Harper Lee, this is an engaging read. This book also touches on the complexities of race and provides food for thought about legal systems.

I really enjoyed this. It was very sad in the end. Also, it made me think I probably wouldn’t have liked Harper Lee much in real life, but I sure felt sorry for her. Both sections about Maxwell and Radney were interesting and it really makes you sad for what might have been in so many different aspects. Such a waste of lives, such a loss of progressive man in southern politics, such possibilities for a great book lost to perfectionism. If you like true crime, politics, and To Kill a Mockingbird or In Cold Blood, this is a good one.

All of the segments of this were interesting enough, but none of them had an end. And the most interesting to me (the reason I read it) was Harper Lee, who is only mentioned once in the first half of the book. So. Interesting, but not terribly satisfying.

Interesting, especially for Harper Lee fans. It's too bad the planned book of her never made it to press; it was certainly a strange case!
