This book is so much better to reread after seeing the new movie. The villainy of Snow is built slowly but surely throughout the story, and as someone who roots for an underdog or a happy ending, this book can be hard to like when neither happen. Snow is greedy, hypocritical, selfish, and a villain from the get-go, but it's Lucy Gray and her mystery, Sejanus and his rebellious spirit, Tigris and her wise beyond her years spirit, that help carry the reader through. I have so many mixed feels but I'll read anything by Suzanne Collins.

Wow. Suzanne Collins has still got it. This series really makes for a fascinating study of political allegory, propaganda and unreliable narration. This particular novel maps the stunning transformation of a privileged boy into a self-righteous villain. Poor Lucy Gray.

I have to admit I liked this more than I thought I would. I watched the Hunger Games series in the theaters, and my goddaughter wanted to watch this one. We never made it to this one. We’ll probably stream it. The ones I saw were so gruesome that I was expecting to shrink while reading each page, but I was surprised. I liked this first book, the insights into how Snow got his start. Now feeling more open to the rest of the series, which my goddaughter started reading at 13 (her capacity for gore at such a young age shocked me). I shall grow my own bravery on her bravery.

DAMN. i wish i read this book before i saw the film because wow…i absolutely loved this so much. i don’t know why the reviews aren’t as high for this book, but the slow descent of snow’s madness into evil and seeing everything happen through his messed up mind was SO WELL DONE. lots of lines stuck out to me and i couldn’t help but get excited at all the philosophy easter eggs thrown into here. i know this just seems like another hunger games story but i think in an analytical point of view, this character study was so interesting and fascinating to read. i definitely recommend this book to anyone who has not yet read it but seen the movie!! 5/5 stars

This book is so complexly intertwined with the previously written stories that your mind is blown at the attention to detail and connections. Suzanne Collins is a brilliant artist in character design and political allusions. I look forward to a reread of the entire series to pick up on details I missed.

scary how this reflects the state of today's world right now. also think snows pov was done perfectly the switch up of his monologue being cynically humourous to him gaslighting himself and to the see the moment he goes off the deep end. personal fave as a reader was suddenly realizing why he hated mockingjays so much and the significance of him throwing away his family photos and his mother's compact towards the end up keeping his father's compass :,)
