I loved this book! I read it while I was living in Haiti for a month back in 1996.

"It is 1941 and Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer, is posted to the Greek island of Cephallonia as part of the occupying forces. At first he is ostracised by the locals, but as a conscientious soldier, whose main aim is to have a peaceful war, he proves in time to be civilised, humorous - and a consummate musician. When the local doctor's daughter's letters to her fiancé go unanswered, the working of the eternal triangle seems inevitable. But can this fragile love survive as the war gets closer and the lines are drawn between invader and defender?" (From Amazon)

Wow...a grand story set in Greece during WWII with the Italian occupation. A great love story but also one of tolerance, tragedy and other kinds of love. The movie is not bad if you can stand Nicholas Cage.

5, 6, 7 stars and more.
I picked this up knowing only two things, 1. that some friends had enjoyed it; friends who I would never have thought would have enjoyed a "love story" and 2. That it was a universally derided Nick Cage flick. It was therefore a bit of a challenge read. Oh was I wrong about this though.
Having read this I have to say that there is a great deal of incongruity between what the synopsis of the book says about the story and what the story actually is. Yes there is a love story in the novel but it is not the one between Corelli and Pallagia that is the heart of the book. The heart of this is the life of Cephallonia and the relationships of those tied to the island.
This is an absolute gem of a book and easily the best book of the year
