The premise is a really interesting one with the way our society is grappling with racism from authority figures and how the videos taken are important but also invasive to the people on the receiving end of the abuse. It also spoke about white saviorism and how performative and over the top some people can be in the opposite direction. However I couldn't rate it higher because Alix's obsession with Emira is super weird. She revolved her life around Emira who was completely oblivious to how creepy Alix was being. Also, there were  unnecessary comments about Alix's weight that seemed to add nothing to the story. The one that sticks to mind is something to the effect of, how could he talk to her like that when she was sitting there only six pounds above her pre-baby weight (I'm paraphrasing). Like, are you serious? Overall, I did enjoy it but these issues made me super uncomfortable.

I really enjoyed the perspectives of both characters and liked the story overall. Something felt lacking for me plot wise, but I haven't been able to put my finger on it. Definitely would recommend this book to anyone looking to gain perspective on the experience of being a Black young women, specifically working as a
Spoiler nanny
. Also deals with a romance, although it is not the primary focus. Dual POV, limited third person.

i was admittedly a lil skeptical before reading this book bc of the hype, but i have to say, now that ive read it, it's hilarious in a satirical yet scarily realistic way.

the author tackled so many things in such a fun age--race, class, culture, white feminism--yet also managed to somehow ground the story in its characters, who were imbued w/ surprising depth and multidimensionality; emira's quarter life crisis was particularly realistic and relatable.

i also loved the deep dive into different dynamics of white liberalism, feminism, and fragility, and amazed at how reid was able to cohesively weave them all tgt into this subtly concerning yet hilarious book.
