This book just kept getting better and better as the stories merged together

I have never hidden my love for Japanese writers. A friend had read Yoko Ogawa's The Housekeeper and the Professor and liked it. Another friend had spoken highly about this one. But it took me a while to actually pick up Ogawa finally.

I have never hidden my love for the macabre either. And in these 11 twisted tales Ogawa takes us on a strange journey reeking of death and melancholia. The stories are dark and have a sombre feel to it. It feels like something heavy is pressing down on your chest making it impossible to breathe effortlessly. All tales are linked to each other through their characters but they don't have to be read serially and hold their own when read individually.

Favourite stories: Old Mrs. J, Welcome to the Museum of Torture, The Man who sold Braces, Tomatoes and the Full Moon

The first few individual stories were quite alright and interesting at times but I wasn't enticed by them to continue reading the rest
