This is a breathtakingly poignant and brutally honest memoir/autobiography supported by frequent segments from research studies and scientific facts. Frizzell simultaneously writes about her own life and the years in which women must make their biggest decisions. These big decisions include who to partner with and if, and when, to have a baby.
She writes about the facts of womanhood and the ways we are socialized. She explores feminine jealousy and the pain and sense of loss we feel when a friend is suddenly pregnant or married and we are not. She challenges the lies we are taught and the unfairness of the burden of fertility. I appreciated that this book reminded me to think deeply about becoming a parent.
I have previously recognized the difficulties of motherhood because of what I saw and experienced as an eldest daughter, although I have not been a mother myself. However, this book painted motherhood and the agony of the decision in great detail, which I appreciated. Frizzell provides a rawness that I value.
