I had never even heard of this series when I stumbled across it on Libby, and now it’s one of my favorites! That being said, I hadn’t read anything about book 2. I just knew I loved book 1 and immediately went to this one when I finished. At first I was very hesitant… like how dare you just switch things up on me like that!?!? But I thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through and I’m already almost finished with book 3. This series makes my top 5 fave series of all time for sure!!

The story was kind of a bore to read as the first quarter of the book already happened in the first book but in Lydia's point of view. The reading did get a little more interesting when Lydia reaches the west.

Killian was an okay character. Lydia had the most character growth. Everyone else was a bit boring. The romance in the story was abysmal especially near the end of the book. Was I supposed to feel something for Killian and Lydia?

I also feel that book was rushed near the end of the book. It felt like I was reading contradictions.

This was once again really good! I didn't know this would be from completely different povs, but it worked well. I was sucked into the story, and enjoyed it.

I was very taken aback when this book started out with different characters than the first one, but liked it once I figured out what was going on. My biggest complaint is that I still don't understand when this war that is being fought started. Despite being confused for much of the book, I actually really liked it!

MY GOSH

I devoured this. The sequel was FAR better than the first. I am now HOOKED & OBSESSED. Killian is everything. And Lydia, are you kidding me?! Her fight! Her wit! Her bravery!!!!! Perfection. Their angst and inability to be together is painful. His loyalty to his kingdom and people is KILLING me, but UGH he has to. These two characters have my heart. And my sword. This world grew and this story became significantly better. Cannot wait to continue!!!!!!!!

Dark Skies is unlike other sequels/books in a series because the author has said it can be read as book 1 as the events of Dark Shores and Dark Skies happen at the same time and involve different characters and different parts of the world. I like the flexibility, but it was a bit frustrating to not progress with the story since I’d grown to care about Marcus and Teriana.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Lydia, so the first half of the book was a little frustrating because it wasn’t advancing the story and it was about a character I didn’t care much for, even if I did suspect she didn’t betray Teriana in the first book.

I enjoyed Dark Skies, but I felt like I wanted it to be faster paced. The political issues in the region were interesting, but I felt like the story was just so slow to progress.

I am definitely going to keep reading the series because I want to know what happens next, I just don’t know that the dual beginnings worked for me.
