For many years, the Hirshhorn was the one museum in the Smithsonian mall that I skipped. I have a thing about modern art – I usually don’t like it. I also tend to avoid video installations. But one year, I went in and saw the video in stallion English Magic and fell in love. The next year I went back and saw this show.

Prior to the show, I had never heard of Shirin Neshat, and at first my interest was only because of the connection to The Book of Kings – The Shamenah – which I had read. But I found myself enthralled, and Facing History was one of the few shows where I watched everything video installation. Turbulent is my favorite.

This companion book to the exhibit features essays on Neshat as well as photos of works from the exhibit. Each section of exhibit works features a brief intro by Neshat herself.

A word of warning, however. Your TBR pile will grow.
